"Wine Tasting Boutique Focusing on Ohio Wines Opens"
- Article from the June 15, 2007 Wine Business Communications, Inc Internet News

Ohio wine lover, Chris Waugh, has just opened one of Ohio's first wine tasting boutiques to showcase Ohio wine. The Wine C.A.R.T.™, located in West Chester, Ohio, offers wine by the bottle, glass, flight, or an individual tasting, as well as entertaining tasting courses, and special night out events. Waugh spent the past three years redefining her career goals, combining her passion of wine, education and entertaining. When she realized she could take her hobby and turn it into a business, the Wine C.A.R.T.™ was born.

The boutique offers free wi-fi for customers along with a lounge to sit and enjoy a favorite wine or read a book or wine magazine. The Wine C.A.R.T.™ offers wine tastings for Ohio-specific wines and provides educational material on Ohio's wine history, but also pours a variety of national and international boutique wines. Each visitor may sample a one ounce serving of up to four different wines on the house.

The Wine C.A.R.T.™ offers numerous weekly, monthly and annual events, tasting courses and entertainment. They will also promote local music students from the surrounding Cincinnati area. They will provide entertainment in the boutique every Friday night and Saturday. The Wine C.A.R.T.™ is located at 6206 Muhlhauser Rd., Union Centre in West Chester, Ohio. "GE's loss is wine lovers' gain"
- Article by Jeff McKinney from Cincinnati's The Enquirer on Sunday, March 11, 2007

The bitter pill of a job layoff from conglomerate General Electric Co. led Chris Waugh to the sweet taste of doing what she really enjoys - running her own business.

Waugh became an entrepreneur last month when she opened the Wine C.A.R.T., a new wine-tasting boutique on Muhlhauser Road next to Paul and Pam Sturkey's Mesh restaurant near Union Centre Boulevard.

The business sells 350-400 different bottles of domestic, international and Ohio-made wines ranging in price from $10 to $75 a bottle.

Waugh expects a big part of her customers to be in their 20s and 30s who want to pair a fine wine with a special meal or other event.

"We offer a nice casual place for people to come relax, sip wine to explore many different wine varietals," Waugh, 51, says.

A wine enthusiast who has traveled to such places as Scotland, South America and China tasting wines, Waugh began planning the boutique after being laid off as a manager of leadership training at GE in Stamford, Conn., in 2003.

She worked for GE in Cincinnati for about 15 years.

Waugh turned her hobby into a business after selling wine for an Ohio distributor for about two years.

"That's when I realized I was having fun doing this," she says.

Waugh and her husband, Mike, spent more than $400,000 to open Wine C.A.R.T., which stands for Courses, Art, Retail and Tourism.

She plans to use the store to showcase Ohio wines and educate people about Ohio's wine history.

"A lot of people are surprised when I tell them Cincinnati was once considered the "Rhine of America," she said, referring to Germany's famous wine region.

"The Ohio Connection"
- Article from the November 13, 2006 CincyBusinessMag.com e-mail newsletter

You don't have to go far for great wine. You don't even have to leave the state, really. Chip Emmerich runs Burnet Ridge Inc., a winery in North College Hill. Importing grapes from northern California, Emmerich produced his own wines at home before making them available to the public in 1993. He recently brought out his 2005 pinot noir; his 2004 vintage came out in May and sold out quickly. Burnet Ridge, sold in high-end stores, is high-quality wine for people who like fine wine, says Emmerich. He also makes the popular Purple Trillium, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot that's been tasted even by the likes of former President Bill Clinton.

And he's not the only one who wants you to think Ohio when it comes to wine. Waugh plans on spotlighting Ohio wines at the Wine C.A.R.T, including vintages from Valley Vineyards in Morrow, Kinkead Ridge in Ripley, the Vinoklet and Henke wineries from Cincinnati and Harmony Hill in Bethel. She's one of several Ohio purveyors who want to educate the masses about Ohio's great wines.
